How to Test Dead Pixels on Any Display
Testing dead pixels takes a few minutes of focused inspection across solid colors. You are looking for dots that never change behavior as colors change.
Prepare a dim room, a clean screen, and either Fillhex’s dead-pixel-test or color-slideshow page ready in fullscreen.
This guide explains what to note for warranty photos and how to avoid mistaking dust for panel defects.
How to use
- Clean screen and darken room slightly.
- Fullscreen white, scan entire panel.
- Fullscreen black, look for bright dots.
- Cycle RGB and note any fixed specks.
- Photograph and contact support if needed.
Before you start
Wipe the panel with a dry microfiber cloth. Remove screen protectors temporarily if they hide specks.
Set brightness to a normal daily level—extremes can hide or exaggerate issues.
Color sequence
White reveals dark dead pixels. Pure black (#000000) reveals bright stuck pixels. Red, green, and blue isolate subpixel channel failures.
Inspection technique
Move your gaze in a grid pattern rather than staring at the center only. Defects often appear near edges where assembly stress concentrates.
Documenting defects
Photograph with exposure locked and include the whole panel. Note purchase date and pixel location in support tickets.
False positives
Lint, scratches, and UI reflections mimic pixels. Change viewing angle slightly; true stuck pixels stay fixed to the glass coordinate.
After the test
If no defects appear, keep the slideshow link for future unboxing checks. If defects appear, compare manufacturer pixel policy before requesting RMA.
